Classic Hose Reel - Loud Grinding Noise

If your classic hose reel is making a loud noise when extending or retracting the hose, use this guide to resolve.

Updated over a month ago

If your classic hose reel is making a loud noise while retracting or extending, the elbow joint (water inlet where the leader hose connects) may need lubrication.

Follow the steps below to resolve.

  1. Access the Elbow Joint

  • Locate the round side panel where the leader hose enters the hose reel.

  • Gently pry it off using a flat head screwdriver or butter knife.

2. Remove the Circlip

  • Use circlip pliers to carefully remove the silver circlip that secures the hose.

3. Detach the Hose

  • Gently pull or leverage the hose away from the elbow joint to expose the o-rings.

4. Apply Lubricant

  • Apply a small amount of silicone-based lubricant directly onto the black rubber o-rings.

  • Avoid oil-based or water-soluble lubricants — these may damage the seals or wash away.

5. Reassemble

  • Push the hose back onto the elbow joint.

  • Reinstall the circlip and pop the panel cover back into place.
